“Open Space, Open Program: Towards the end of the Curated City”

Two years ago, I was honored to be invited at a workshop entitled “Mediterranean Urban Campus for Regeneration project”, that was selected by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs among the initiatives carried out at the Italy Pavilion of the Dubai Expo 2020. The book “Mediterranean Urban Campus for Regeneration at the Dubai 2020 Expo: Urban Open Spaces toward the New Challenges of Adaptivity” is the fruition of that workshop and the discourse generated through it and beyond.

My chapter deals with findings on previous research of mine on informality and on the morphological and social characteristics of the public space in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It also attempts to highlight the presence of political space within such a non-political, over-controlled context.

Special thanks to Cristiano Lucetti for introducing me to the workshop and of course to all the team of the Department of Architecture at the Pescara University. The Book can be found at and downloaded from here: https://series.francoangeli.it/index.php/oa/catalog/book/904
